The frosting upon Wayne Thiebaud’s 1963 painting, Cakes, is really so thickly used that i'm frequently lured to reach out, operate my finger along among perfect cake-tops to taste the sugary dessert. Thiebaud cleverly utilizes a thick application of paint to mimic the design and surface of frosting, showcasing the notion of ‘object transference’ where in actuality the paint literally assumes the appearance of the element its depicting. His work from 60s centered on mass culture was characterised by heavy, colourful pigment and solid outlines put upon stark backgrounds. The balanced and symmetric arrangement associated with the cakes shows a counter display at a patisserie and attracts the audience to visually eat the nice confections.

In her own Thiebauds series, American musician Sharon Core recreated and photographed Thiebaud’s sugary nice Pop Art paintings from very early 1960s. The photographs, focused on memory and repetition give a material form towards the coated confections. Core inverted the standard structure of painting from pictures by composing an image from a painting. Ironically, Thiebaud presumably composed his paintings from photographs which often, make Core’s art a number of pictures from paintings from pictures – strengthening the themes of repetition. The frosting carefully put on the cakes by Core to seem as brushstrokes upon a canvas imitates the paint Thiebaud put on appear to be frosting, once again engaging the concept of ‘object transference’. Issues of artifice occur because of the convolution between paint and frosting, food and fabrication based in the dialogue involving the artwork and picture.
